Words Alive! Writing Contest Winner: Kantaro Sekiya (Poetry)

“A Boy Named Kantaro”

The name is good for you, my father said

the day I was born.

My father wanted to use

part of his name for me.

My mother said kind

of the same thing.

My mother wanted to use her same initials.

My mother and my father

went to the temple.

A Buddhist monk helped my parents

with making my name.

The Buddhist monk said the name “Kantaro.”

My parents agreed with him.

My father’s name is included in my name

My mother’s name is included in my name.

The meaning of my name is to become

a man who could think positively.

I am a person

who thinks positively.

You are like your name, my parents said.
