Up in arms: A call for editorial topics

Sam Ruth takes his position as FYE Communication manager to the next level with a regular editorial for the Horizon.

by Sam Ruth – Communications Manager for First Year Experience

Greetings from FYE! I am Samuel Ruth, the Communications Manager for the First Year Experience at Hesston College. My main job is to facilitate the programs that FYE puts on this semester. These will include many guest speakers such as Pulitzer prize-winning author of “Enrique’s Journey,” Sonia Nazario, who is visiting during a special event at the HMC Sanctuary on Tuesday, October 4 at 7 p.m. There will also be an FYE sponsored arts week and film festival later in the semester. Among other duties, I also have the pleasure of writing a series of editorials for the Hesston College Horizon. I will be writing on a variety of topics relating to current events, starting, of course, with immigration.

I would like to hear feedback from students, both first and second-years, on what topics they find interesting or even controversial. What topics should we wrestle with in the Horizon? What should students be thinking about? What issues, questions or arguments presented themselves in FYE, in your classes, or in the media are worth exploring?

If you know me at all, you’ll know that what I write may have, let’s say, a liberal tint to it, but I welcome counter-points. If you’re interested in writing, please contact me: samr@hesston.edu.

I look forward to a year of education, enlightenment and great debate.
